I found myself walking around the ecology and evolution department this afternoon in anticipation of a lecture there. I was hoping to find some information or maybe even a “free shelf.” I discovered some flyers for a preparing future faculty series that we never saw around the art school- bummer- of course we don’t publish or do interviews or anything like that. I went to crlt and got the info. EEB also have many cordboard boxes laying around- just in case.

if you don’t like to get spam from all of the email spiders that search the web, you can get some java script code to insert into your webpage…
try googling: java email link
choose one you like
you can see what one looks like here:
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~gharp/connect.htm
here’s a version of the code that made it:
script language=”JavaScript”
document.write(‘a hre’+'f=”m’+'ai’+'lto:’+'%67%68%61%72%70%40%75%6d%69%63%68%2e%65%64%75″electronic mail\/a’);
email /script
somewhere there is a form that you can fill out and it automatically sends you the code, but I haven’t “refound” yet

This is one of may favorite quotes, I think:
Ohno and Ohno (1986) conceptualized the transdisciplinary meanings of genomic repetition as a source of inspiration and novelty.
“Whereas ordinary mortals are content to mimic others, creative geniuses are condemned to plagiarize themselves” is my shorter, albeit inarticulate, version of what Van Veen said in Ada by Vladimir Nobokov. Indeed, it seems that vaunted geniuses seldom invented more than one modus operandi during their lifetimes, and even civilization has largely been dependent upon plagiarizing a small number of creative works; e.g., the multitudes of Gothic churches can be viewed as pan European plagiarism of the abbey church of St. Denis and/or the cathedral at Sens. This is not surprising for new genes sensu stricto has seldom been invented. Evolution rather relies on plagiarizing an old and tested theme; the mechanism of evolution by gene duplication. … this principle of repetitious recurrence pervades both the construction of coding sequences in the genome, which can be regarded as being representative of nature, and musical composition which can be regarded as the most abstract and therefore the most intellectual expression of nature. (Ohno and Ohno 1986)”
In joining the concepts of linearity and plagiarism, Ohno and Ohno ignite a relationship between two of the most ancient and derived expressions of nature and humanity, that of the genetic code and music composition.
1. it deals with repetition
2. if refers to nabakov and “ada”
3. evolution and church architecture are in the same paragraph
4. aesthetics and genomic biology share equal space
I asked a reporter today about his approach to metapor. I prefaced the question with a statement about how evolutionary biology is full of metaphors- going on to highlight the apparent conflict between scientific proclamations that the genome is the “grail” or book of life or language of god and the scientific community’s response to intelligent design. He said that he paid attention to metaphors- which I suppose is all one can do. Still, using metaphorical language is a political act, and it seems to be irresponsible if we aren’t genuine with the beliefs contained in our choices of metaphors. Anyway, I hope at least everyone (many scientists) in the room saw the connection between their discourse and society.

I hit a crisis on Thursday following seminar- intense desire to redo my entire website (gabrielharp.com) and finish work for my upcoming shows early. The website is almost done- save for the many unlinked links. Carnival, Nursery, Lab, and Chapel…cognitive frameworks for the work I am doing.
The two shows
endless forms:
1. I think I will continue working on the princess and the PEA project that started with ebayaday…I want to cast the pea in something more special- perhaps bronze, or a coppery silver or green gold or something- maybe a local jewler can do it- but maybe I can also do it. all that’s left os the container, how is it ( or al 7 if there are seven) displayed?
on a pillow(s)?
under matresses (life size) pee-stained?
vitrine (sp?)
fabrics
ne
2. the other is this natural selection device a la gluttony
beeswax and glass
need to get the glass welded
need to redo the cones?
how does it sit, stand, not fall over?
2nd year show
I’m debatting- do I try for the nursery and the cahpel or just the chapel?
now at least there is a tabernacle for the average jesus and the goods to sit on the pedestal rather than so much more open
what about the cusp screens?
wher do I print them?
how
at leasst it’s on “paper” now
the nursery is another matter…
chairs
wall hangings
toys
the epigenetic landscape
here’s a sketch of the plan:
1. Nursery
a. Jigsaw Peg Puzzle (lac operon)
b. Chairs (abstinence at the fertility clinic II)*
i. ***musical chairs
c. Beads on string (BioBricks)
i. ***taking the beads on and off

e. Sandbox (w/family images?)
f. Organelle View*
g. Princess Detector* (ART)
h. Evolution Children’s Book
i. T-shirt hooks/experiment
j. Rorschak tests
2. Lab

apparently semeiotica is Italian for
symp·to·ma·tol·o·gy (sĭm’tə-mə-tŏl’ə-jē, sĭmp’-)
n.
The medical science of symptoms.
The combined symptoms of a disease.
awesome.
okay, you are wondering why this is cool.
well…given what I posted earlier about how signs and sex and what-not are related, I forgot to mention that a big questiion for evolutionary biologists is about what forces maintain sexual reproduction instead of, well, asexual reproduction. Turns out that PARASITES are thought to account for selection to maintain sex and recombination (e.g. meiosis). The idea is that parasites try to infect their hosts, and the hosts don’t want to be infected. Eventually, hosts that recombine their genomes have more genetic variation to “escape” the parasites…that’s the idea at least.

this is my new blog that I must now resolve to post in every day.
or else.
the name i chose because it it a mixture of many things
seeing- that where the (se) is from and if you look at my old webpage (soon to be updated and redesigned), the title is “see.change.” –change being something we all need to be ammenable to
so then there is meiotic- which refers to the genetic mechanism of change- the kind that happens during the formation of sperm or eggs (gametes)
of course you could take the sound of “semeiotic” and you would have semiotic (no e)- which refers to the systematic study of signs and thier relationships- i.e. as in something you see or the relationships that change
by adding an “a” at the end we get semeiotica- the “otica” coming in where maybe the erotica left off— meiosis—sex.
anyway that’s the name.
you can email me at semeiotica@gmail.com
